Basic Gun Dog Training in Tyler, Texas

Hunting with a well-trained dog can make the experience more entertaining and efficient. Our basic gun dog training in Tyler, Texas, is designed to bring out the best in your canine companion.

Through a step by step program, we'll help your dog master essential skills like obedience, retrieving, and staying steady to shot.

What Is Basic Gun Dog Training?

Basic gun dog training is a specialized form of obedience training that prepares dogs for everything they may encounter on a duck hunt.

At One Shot Retrievers, our 4-month program, designed for dogs aged five months or older, covers foundational obedience training, collar conditioning, and force fetch.

We work with several breeds known for their natural retrieving ability, including Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Boykin Spaniels, and English Cocker Spaniels. We do not accept non retrieving breeds into our basic gun dog or advanced programs.

Pedigree and breed will strongly influence how well and how quickly your dog progresses through our basic and advanced retriever programs.

E-collar conditioning teaches dogs to respond reliably to commands, even with distractions. Force fetch is a process which teaches dogs to fetch a desired object quickly and deliver to hand. It is also the precursor to everything we will do in our advanced program.

Upon completion of force fetch, your pup will be reliably delivering to hand and is ready to progress to the field. At this time, they will be introduced to all field and water scenarios that you may encounter while hunting.

We also have advanced gun dog training for those looking to take their dog's training to the next level. This program is tailored for dogs that have completed the basics and spans an additional 6 to 10 months. We focus on more complex skills like:

  • Blind retrieves
  • Double and triple marks
  • Introduction to poison birds
  • Walk-up scenarios
  • Honoring

What Can a Dog Learn During Gun DOG Training?

Single Marked Retrieves

In basic gun dog training, your canine companion learns to follow your commands to fetch marked objects like bumpers and birds. They become skilled at retrieving items accurately with consistent practice, E-collar conditioning, and force fetch.

Delivery to Hand

A well-trained gun dog excels at delivering retrieved items directly to your hand. Our training sessions focus on teaching your dog to handle objects without destroying them and bring them back to you 100% of the time.

Steady to Shot

Steadiness ensures your gun dog stays calm and composed when gunfire erupts. Through careful training and exposure to simulated hunting scenarios, we help your dog develop the discipline and focus needed to remain steady and attentive during the hunt.

Benefits of Basic Gun Dog Training

Enhanced Bonding

Through the shared experience of training and hunting together, you and your dog will develop a deeper bond built on trust, communication, and mutual respect.

Improved Hunting Skills

Basic gun dog training equips your dog with the skills and discipline needed to excel in the field, improving their ability to retrieve birds and assist you during hunting expeditions.

Increased Safety

A well-trained gun dog is a safe gun dog. By teaching your dog to be steady to shot and to respond to your commands quickly, you can enjoy a safer and more enjoyable hunting experience for you and your canine companion. Without E-collar conditioning, you have no way to safely get your dog back to you if they decide to chase a crippled bird. Our training program gives you 100% control over your dog while you are in distracting hunting situations.

Versatility

Basicgun dog training opens up a world of possibilities for you and your dog, whether you're participating in hunt tests, field trials, or enjoying outdooradventures together.
